I can’t for the life of me recall a time when a band premiered a new track in the form of a guitar tab video. Perhaps this is Real Estate’s answer to the lyric videos that dominated 2013. This approach makes sense, too; this is a band that has always leaned on deft, if slightly temperate guitar work to drive their softly glowing tone. That isn’t to say that frontman Martin Courtney’s balmy vocals don’t help define this New Jersey group’s signature intonation. This time around, Courtney addresses fleshed-out fears of a nebulous future and (somewhat strained) hope of love’s perpetuity. Along with the motif of distance present in their first single, Talking Backwards, this subtly impassioned track helps to set the tone of their upcoming third LP, Atlas (out March 3 in the UK, March 4 in the US via Domino).
If you don’t think you can wait to hear the rest of the album, and let’s be honest, nobody would blame you, Atlas is streaming here through iTune’s First Play.
